- These eight books of the Prophets1
- were bequeathed by Rachel daughter of Solomon,
- known as Ḥadid b. Job b.
- Solomon b. Shatun b. Mar Bakhshita,
- to the Jerusalemite synagogue in Fustat,
- Egypt, that they should read it in the
- Synagogue. It should not be sold or redeemed,
- and anyone who sells it or pawns it or steals it,
- may he be accursed to the God of Israel
- and may he be excommunicated by the Lord and under the curse of
- Joshua b. Nun4 and the curse of Judah
- b. Ezekiel5. But may the one who bequeathes it and keeps it
- and reads it be blessed with the blessing of
- our father Abraham, and may all Israel be
- under the influence of the blessing, Amen.
Notes
- The four books of former prophets and the four books of latter prophets, i.e. all the נביאים.
- i.e. Biblical Joshua.
- i.e. Rav Judah, the Babylonian amora.
The terminus post quem of the dedication is the founding of the Jerusalemite Synagogue, but palaeographically this looks to date from the earliest period when this community is attested.
